How to Save Mobile Data While Travelling Internationally

Jan 5, 2026 · 3 min read

A reality of travel is the need to stay connected, for navigation, communication and staying entertained during long journeys. A common problem for all travellers is high roaming costs and fast data consumption while on the move.

We’ve got you covered with the best data roaming hacks that will help make your plan go further, no matter how far you are from home. Most of all, we’re sharing how an eSIM is the ultimate travel companion when it comes to cost-saving connectivity

What is Data Roaming?

The reason your data usage increases when you’re travelling is because of data roaming (when your phone automatically connects to a local cellular network instead of your home provider).

Everything from navigation, updating social media, sending photos, and background app updates uses data, so for travellers who rely on all these things, roaming while abroad can end up being expensive.

How to Reduce Mobile Data While Travelling

Get the inside track on the best ways to use your phone overseas, helping you go further with your data.

Use Offline Maps and Downloads

Stay safe without sacrificing your mobile data by downloading your map routes over accommodation Wi-Fi each day.

For long journeys, favourite playlists, movies and TV shows can all be downloaded ahead of time to ensure you’ve got enough content.

Turn Off Background Data and App Refresh

Even if you’re not using your apps, they can consume data in the background with automatic updates and refreshes.

Disabling this on iOS or Android helps reduce unconscious data use. This is also a great way to preserve your battery life, and another essential when travelling!

Optimise Streaming and Social Media Usage

As much as we love to stay connected, you can lower your streaming quality and disable auto-play on social media apps to preserve data.

This small change will make a huge difference to your usage, because you won’t be streaming as much content as usual.

Prioritise Wi-Fi Where Safe and Reliable

Wherever you can guarantee a safe, secure connection, get online. Most accommodation will provide a reliable Wi-Fi network for guests, as will cafés, bars and some shopping malls.

The digital nomad approach to work and travel is becoming an increasingly popular way of life. You can capitalise on this by finding accessible coworking spaces to get online.
