Travel According to the Plan: Japan in Cherry Blossom Season - A Complete 7 Day Travel Guide with EscapeSIM

Cherry blossom season in Japan is absolutely magical. The cities come alive with soft pink blooms, and locals and tourists alike gather for hanami (flower viewing). If you're planning a trip to Japan during cherry blossom season, you’re in for a treat. I’ve done this trip myself using a 7-day Japan eSIM plan from EscapeSIM, and honestly—it made the whole experience so much easier. From navigating train schedules, using translation apps to talk to the locals, booking tickets online and finding hidden ramen joints on Google Maps, having reliable data was a game-changer.

Destination Tokyo: Shinjuku Gyoen, teamLab Planets, Asakusa

First stop: Tokyo. It’s fast-paced, colourful, and just the right amount of chaos. Having reliable data from a Japan travel eSIM for Japan means you can explore without worrying about getting lost (because, trust me, you will get lost without it).

There are some great skyscraper hotels in Tokyo to choose from, with all your modern conveniences all in one place. Though, if you are looking to experience the everyday Japanese lifestyle at home, you can look up some short-term stay rentals that add to the overall vibe.

Shinjuku Gyoen

Shinjuku Gyoen is breathtaking during cherry blossom season. There are over 1,000 cherry trees here, and when they’re in full bloom, it’s like walking through a pink cloud. Grab some snacks from a konbini (convenience store) and find a quiet spot for hanami. Pro tip: go early to avoid the crowds. You can use Google Maps to check opening hours and the best entrances to avoid the crowds.

teamLab Planets

This one’s a must. teamLab Planets is an immersive digital art experience where you walk through water and light. It’s trippy in the best way possible. You can book tickets directly on their official website, on Tickets Tokyo, or at a Lawson's Inc convenience store Loppi multimedia terminal. Make sure to book ahead, as tickets often sell out during cherry blossom season. Having data makes it easy to double-check your booking details and find the best route there.

Asakusa

For a taste of traditional Tokyo, head to Asakusa and visit the Senso-ji Temple on Nakamise Street, which leads to the temple. It's lined with stalls selling everything from snacks to lucky charms. Don’t know what you’re ordering? No worries! You can use a translation app to work it all out. I highly recommend trying the freshly made ningyo-yaki (sweet cakes filled with red bean paste). You can look up the cultural significance of any charms or omikuji (fortune slips) on your phone.

Destination Kyoto: Fushimi Inari Shrine, Kiyomizu-dera

Next stop: Kyoto. Hop on the shinkansen (bullet train)—it’s fast, smooth, and an experience in itself. Thanks to Japan's fast internet and reliable data from a prepaid eSIM, you can check train schedules on Hyperdia and avoid any confusion. You can order your tickets in English on the JR Rail website or at the central train station. I personally recommend the 7-day JR-Rail Pass. The best part of having a Japan travel eSIM is that it makes checking routes and schedules stress-free.

If you are looking for a more traditional place to soak up some ancient culture, Kyoto is the place to be. I highly recommend booking a night in a Ryokan (traditional Japanese inn) and experience Kyoto like the locals.

Fushimi Inari Shrine

Fushimi Inari is the one with the iconic red torii gates you’ve probably seen all over Instagram. Walking through those gates at sunrise is surreal. The earlier you go, the fewer people you’ll have to dodge for that perfect photo. Use Google Maps to track your progress, as the torii gate paths can get a bit long. With a reliable Japan eSIM, you can live stream your ascent or post a selfie when you reach the 14th marker point at the top. After all, as they say on social media, “pics or it didn’t happen!”

Kiyomizu-dera

The Kiyomizu-dra temple is perched on a hill, giving you stunning views over Kyoto—especially when the cherry blossoms are in bloom. In the evening, the temple is often illuminated. Check the opening hours and light-up times online to avoid disappointment. With your phone, you can also find nearby cafes or sweet shops to grab a matcha soft serve afterward—don’t forget to use a translation app to order your usual coffee too.
